Hi, I am very new to Ubuntu, and am having a few problems with my sound.
I have tried to look for a solution (for quite some time), but everything I find is very confusing as I am still not used to the system at all. An "idiots guide" would be much appreciated.

I am using an HP Compaq DC7100 (I know, but I got given it free when my old system broke and I got this free at short notice).

Basically I have an internal speaker and the usual headphone, line in and microphone sockets. When I play any sound, it comes from the internal speaker, as opposed to coming out the speakers I have plugged into the headphone socket. I have tried changing every sound setting I can possibly find and NOTHING seems to change it. Please help, it's driving me up the wall.

Im really new to linux myself but my first guess would be that you have a driver problem, not sure though. Just as a place for you to start I would recommend going here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449

Its fairly straightforward and should be of some help.
