Managed switches cost thousands of dollars. I was wondering if there existed a way to make a defacto managed switch by using a Linux-based PC router hooked up to a standard switch. Anyone know if this is possible?

I don't think so. You'd need 1 nic per port. Even then you really don't have a managed switch, you have a linux for with 24 network cards in it and it would be a freaking nightmare to configure all the VLANs. Managed switches aren't that expensive. We got a dell 48 port managed switch for under a $1000 usd.
