I'm trying to install ubuntu on my macbook air OSX leopard.

I followed the instructions which are available here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Macbook_Air

I rebooted but the ubuntu (windows) partition is not recognised. It shows under MacOSX but is listed as not mounted.

Will refit remedy this?

I'm tearing my hair out. Please help.

Try using the partitioning tool on the rEFIt boot screen, and it will re-sync all of your partitions allowing you to see and boot from your windows partition. That's my suggestion.

Are you holding Option on startup?

As stated already, you may need to sync your partitions (whether or not you have Windows installed.)
