No system sounds

All my sounds work, except my system sounds. When I hover the sound file (.wav) it plays. When I go into my sound preferences and select a file and hit play nothing happens. When I check a check box(just to test it) nothing happens...but I can still play music and pidgin will still make it's sounds. How do I make my system sounds work?

I've not solved this problem, and would be interested in any potential solution. The cause of this (for me) is that the default sound card is not detected by the system. What sound card does your system use?

It's an on-board Nvidia or something, I'm not to sure.
