I just tried out ubuntu on my macbook using the cd to live boot (not installing) and it was REALLY slow. My specs are 2gz Intel Core Duo, and 512 mb of ram. I was using the 32-bit version. How does it run if i actually install it? and is there any point in using the 64-bit version?

runs slow off a cd ;)

Ubuntu should run very well on your machine. You do have a lower amount of RAM, which probably contributed to the slowness on the CD, but it wouldn't be an issue on an real install (make sure you have swap!)

32bit vs 64bit:

I am not sure which version Macbook you have, but there are guides showing fixes for the various issues you will likely encounter:

Your MacBook is not 64-bit. And yes, it should running quick on a HDD install. Mine was as fast as Tiger with the same specs.

Ah yes I missed that. You must have a 1st gen Macbook which has a Core Duo, not a Core 2 Duo... Core cannot do 64bit, but Core 2 can.
