I have one of the old brightly colored iBooks. It will no longer handle current Apple OS.

Will Ubuntu run on it?

Probably, can you boot a live CD and see if everything is recognized? That is your best and safest bet. I know that with the now macbook that pressing 'c' during boot will boot to cd, that should work for you also I would guess.
