Installation of Debian 40r3 went fine to an external firewire drive, but it won't boot when I select it from the boot menu. It shows a Linux drive with firewire emblem but when I select it, it just boots to OSX. Is there a fix or trick for this ?

Yes, see this:

I've booted firewire drives on my G5 for both Ubuntu and Debian Etch / Lenny-testing with this. It looks a bit involved, but once you do it, it won't seem so painful. :)
You may not need the OFBOOT line.
