Hello, I am new to ubuntu and these forums. I recently downloaded the Ubuntu 8.04 .iso and attempted to burn it to a cd to try it out via live boot on my pc and my mac. I downloaded the file onto my macbook, and burned it. Unfortunately the cd is not working on either machines. Does any one have any suggestions on how to fix this problem because I do not want to request a free cd since i hear it takes a while to arrive.
Thank you :)

Instruction is for the PC, but you said you have one, too... :-)

Thank you. I will try this and report back on if it worked or not.

Good luck. BTW, is your mac an intel mac or a ppc mac? Just asking, as if the mac is ppc, you will need to download and burn a different iso for that one. See the sticky at the top of the forum.

Thank you for your response, which was occasioned by some folks referring to their laptops as "macbooks" even though they aren't.
If following the link does not help you with the current iso, then, if it is a Live CD, you may want to consider downloading and, after checking the md5sum, burning the alternate install iso to cd, using a CD-R.

Ok I burned the cd, and rebooted. It checked the cd for defects and then got a message saying "error reading boot cd". This was on my windows machine. Does this men I can not try it before I install it or does this mean I can not install it?

What it means to me is that it isn't going to boot, so you will neither be able to try it nor install it.

Is there a way to fix this problem?

On Windows, I found Infra Recorder and Iso Recorder to work very well.
Before you even burn, you may want to check your md5sum, which that link covers as well. Maybe you are getting consistently bad downloads.
I'm not sure if it applies to your Intel box, but for ppc, most use CD-R rather than CDRW - see if that makes a difference. But check your md5sum first.

I'm reburning the cd. I've been trying it out on my windows box. I checked the md5sum and it is fine.

I rebooted it. It loaded to about 10% and then i got the "error reading boot cd" message again.

Did you do the CD integrity check first? It sounds like a bad burn to me, assuming there isn't a problem with the CD drive on the windows box (hardware related). Maybe the drive needs to be cleaned? Just throwing out a couple of ideas.

Make sure to use Disk Utility if you're burning it on a mac - and make sure you're burning using the .iso file... not the files the .iso generates.

I burned it again on the slowest possible setting. It still isn't working. I'm having a friend burn it for me. Maybe it was just a bad torrent. Does any one have a link to a good one? I'm using http://www.mininova.org/tor/1352774.

I burned it at a friends house and it works. It must be my piece of crap burner. Thank you to every one who replied here.

I had no problem burning an ISO image of Ubuntu on Intel Mac, using Toast.
