Hi to all.
Im using xp on old dell 3000 pc which i bought new, ive been computing for just a few years and slowly learning the ropes, my son is needing his own pc and ive decided to give him this one.
Im not interested in buying another Dell system because of all the Bloatware that they install, Im fed up with messing about with anti virus and keeping thing running smoothly ect, i dont see why i have to pay mr Gates again for running his software on a 2nd pc, im looking for something different and came accross abuntu.
Im thinking of buying a new pc base unit from the following spending around £300,
http://www.computerplanet.co.uk/
They have said will install linux on a new build but do not offer technical assistance on the O/S.
Should I take the plunge?
And what graphics card would i need to work with my new screen in the following link:
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Displays/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=19&sku=320-6252
I will also need a new wireless router, so my son upsairs can connect,
Thank you for any advice,
Graham.

The installation process for Ubuntu is really very simple so even buying just a base unit would be ok and downloading your prefered flavour of linux..?
If you already have a wireless router then I doubt you would need an additional one, but if you laptop is using a wired connection then maybe so..
Have you thought about buying the parts for the PC and building it with your son? I still remember doing soldering and board improvements with my Dad with the BBC Micro so it can be a nice thing to do! :)

If I were you I'd buy a 'barebones' box with no operating system on it and do the lot yourself. If a desktop is appropriate, you should be able to buy a box with no OS and install ubuntu yourself - cheaper still; buy the parts and build the computer yourself, then install ubuntu. I did that recently, saved AUD$450 on the computer and probably many $100's on M$ OS and software - if Bill gets richer, no $$$ will come from me.

This is the best way.
it will save lot of your hard yearned money.

I too recently did the same and i saved 20% of my total cost that tehy told me in quotation.
But building a PC is not possible without any experince.
So try buying without an OS

Use a descriptive thread title that refelcts the content of your inquiry and not a generic "noob here" or "need help"

I like that idea, thanks ouchico..
I would like to do the barebones option but im a little intrepid, but certainly tempting. :)

These (http://www.psystar.com/) computers will run almost any OS.

Just to add Graham, the PC's as specified from that site are overpriced imo. You can pick up a system similar to the Home 1000 for a lot less than £350.

This was a similar thread from the other day - there is quite a bit of english bias there for suppliers

Hi. Are you in the US or UK? Dell offers PCs and laptops preloaded with Ubuntu (US (http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/linux_3x?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs), UK (http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/topics/topic.aspx/emea/segments/gen/client/en/ubuntu_landing?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn)); so, no microsoft tax or bloatware.
