I’m looking to create a shared Ubuntu desktop over the internet (using SSH and X) for about 50 users. Ubuntu has both desktop and server installations so should I
a) install the desktop version and tweak it somehow for the large server
b) install the server version then install desktop components afterwards
The box I have contains 2 Opteron CPUs and has 8G of memory. From reading the forums it looks like the difference between the two installations are which packages are installed by default. Also reading the press release the server version handles multiprocessors and 4GB of RAM for 32-bit architectures out-of-the-box.
1) So is there additional stuff you get with server that you don’t get with desktop other than the packages? For example you don’t get multiprocessor out of the box for desktop.
2) Do you get more than 4GB RAM for 64-bit architecture out-of-the-box.
Thanks for any pointers
