I am trying to install mplayer manually. One of the "dependencies" is the mplayer-skins. I do not use the GUI mplayer; therefore, I have no use for the skin. I do not even know why it is listed as a "dependency!"
I do not want to clutter my system with junk. Is there a way to install mplayer without this junk?

You could try downloading the sources from mplayer-hq. They might have a "console only" version.

Well, yes :-). Try installing the svn mplayer:

and simply omit the steps that deal with Gmplayer.
