View Full Version : HOWTO: Make OpenOffice.org start in just a couple of seconds

Ready for this one? It's a little difficult ;)

Open up OpenOffice.org. I used writer, but it should work in any of them.

Go to the Tools>Options menu.

Go to the "Java" option.

Disable the "Use a Java runtime environment" option.

Voila, start time reduced from 15 seconds to 2 seconds!

I can't take credit for this, it came from Slashdot... But it sure as heck works!

But it is still slow the very first time I start it. If I close and start writer again it is faster.

What functionality do you lose by disabling java?

i haven't tried it myself, but according to this article everything is still available through menus although some tools won't work and give warnings:

I change run time environment from "sun" to "blackdown linux team" and it still opens very quickly...

i don't know if it break some functionalities... but it's fast!!

I think the help stuff used the Java.

Base (the database programme) won't work without java.

BTW, I have just tried disabling java, and did not perceive any difference.

I've really got no idea what it disables, but for my uses (writing papers for classes), it still works fine, so no problems there.

Jeremy, that's strange--my startup time literally dropped from around 15 seconds to less than 3.

My startup time is about 10-15 seconds, with or without java. I haven't timed it, but really could not see any difference (is there was a difference, it was only a second or two). I am using 1.9.129 for the breezy CD.

That story on slashdot was in no way fair. Comparing a $300+ dollar program with a free one. Come on, give me a break! All that story shows me is how powerful open source programs are becoming. If they can even be mentioned (openoffice) along side programs that cost milllions upon millions to make. It's the most amazing thing to me.

same here..zero difference in load time. ~5 sec each. if it was taking your 30 seconds to load OOo, then you need a new system, IMO.

If I run (for example) Writer, it takes say 10 seconds. If I change nothing in it then quit it and run it again, it is quicker, presumably because of caching and so on. I think that is the effect that is being seen here. I vote this thread be taken out of the tips forum - it could be kept elsewhere for more discussion and research of course.

It's a laptop, so the limiting factor here is the harddrive. Maybe that's why I'm seeing an effect and others arent?

If someone wants to move this thread, fine with me, since not everyone seems to be getting the same benefits...
