K Desktop Environment

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KDE

The name KDE was intended as a word play on the existing Common Desktop Environment, available for Unix systems. CDE was an X11-based user environment jointly developed by HP, IBM, and Sun, through the X/Open Company, with an interface and productivity tools based on the Motif graphical widget toolkit. It was supposed to be an intuitively easy-to-use desktop computer environment.[3] The K was originally suggested to stand for "Kool", but it was quickly decided that the K should stand for nothing in particular. Additionally, one of the tips in certain versions of KDE 3 incorrectly states that the K currently is just meant to be the letter before L in the Latin alphabet, the first letter in the word Linux (which is where KDE is usually run).[4]

Just the graphical interface for doing things in. Ubuntu by default uses Gnome which is what you see and Kubuntu just makes KDE the default for what you see. Some ppl prefer KDE and some Gnome. There are tons of interfaces to choose from though...

KDE - Gnome - Fluxbox - E17 Enlightment - ICEWM - and more

If you want to try it out, stick with 3.5.9. KDE4 is crapware (or a development release, if you believe the hype).

KDE4 is a complete re-write of KDE, including entirely new ways of rendering the desktop, fonts, icons, internal sound, everything. It does not depend on X11 and therefore KDE4 apps will run native in Mac, Windows, Linux, everything.

Yes it is in the early stages, but Kubuntu's KDE4 offerings are quite stable as they come from the Debian KDE4 packages.

Yeh KDE4 is great, if you like big ugly black panels and desktop icons that can only display 5 characters at a time.
sigh

How long has it been since you tried KDE4? Here is OpenSUSE 11 KDE 4 default desktop. No black bars, and many more then 5 chars on the icons...

Moved to Recurring Discussions. The OP's question has been answered, so all that remains is to decide once and for all whether KDE 4 is good or bad.

He sunnyR. lots of people have shown that you're are wrong with you're conclusions and ask to show what you mean. You even make a group at *-look.org to spread you're FUD, but still you don have shown it in any way what you're problem is on kde where others show screen shots that you're wrong.

http://kde-look.org/groups/?id=90&PHPSESSID=a97d324e91f85323b8d7afa2788ffa97

Its also polite to answer people in you're own group at *-look.org.

kde 4.0 the panel was already re-sizable after the first update but it had a bug where it didn't adjust some things to the right size of the panel.
The Color of the panel you also could change with some editing in a config file. The icon part is only if you make the icon to small then it doesn't show all characters.

in 4.1 everything can be done with GUI tools.

Maybe time to try it again with the 4.1 and really try it, and don't talk about things you have heard our read without trying youre self because that is what it looks like now that you never tryed it.

given enough time I think KDE 4.1++ will be at least as successful as KDE 3.5.x
no need to hate or despise it because it's still in development. plus the KDE guys usually make very good apps (Ktorrent, K3b, KMail, no mentioning Amarok and the list could go on)
