I changed my trash icon on my desktop to reflect my new Mac Theme,
but now it won't respond to the contents.

Right now it shows empty even though its full.

Any suggestions?

I am not familiar with the MAC theme; however, check the image dump of the theme in your system files. Perhaps there is no image for a trash can with junk in it. Or they are doubled up on the empty image. You should be able to rip a system path to them from the menu where you chose the theme.

The trash icon on your desktop is not a regular icon.
You can't just choose one from an icon list and expect it to work, because it won't.

The best way to do it is to choose an icon theme and install that theme. It will then set-up the trash icon on your desktop to that particular theme.

However, if you just want to change the trash icon and leave the theme untouched, this link may be of help to you:
