I am new to linux and very confused about those basic concepts such as X window system, x server, session, session manager, display manager, desktop environment, and so on. What are the precise definitions of those terms? Which books or tutorials explain them systematically?

Thanks, but it's a place about "how to", not about "what is".

This is very nice tutorial to start understanding - http://www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Teaching/Unix/

An internet search for any of these terms will give you a raft of info, may as well start there while you are waiting for progress here.

I think Wikipedia will be your friend

X Window System (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_Window_System)
