Click the medal to say "thanks"
And umm...I don't know how normal users do "solved"...I click Thread Tools -> Mark this thread as solved. I don't know if that's available to the thread-starter or not though.

Of course you're correct about the medal in the bottom right of the posts :)

And yes the thread starter can choose "Thread Tools → Mark Thread as Solved" to "solve" their thread :)
