When I get a chance I'll read up more on this but wanted to ask in general what download speeds you get when using a torrent file?
I've been using azureus with a cable connection and each torrent I've downloaded in the past couple weeks has been some where between 15-30kb/s.
I'm just curious if that is the norm for a torrent or if I need to tweak something. I did look at my limit and it is set at no limit.

Depends on how many seeds, 30kbps is not bad if there is 10-20seeds, if there is 12,000 seeds its very bad :)

If there are a decent amount of seeds with decent upload bandwidth available, then I'll eventually max out my connection, around 460 - 480kbps.

if you hardly upload anything, or nothing. you will get very bad speeds, you should be aiming to get around 1:1 upload/download ratio

depends on many factors, how many seeds, peers, how much of the file you need to get, the best client imo is azureus and i have maxed my connection speed often on it at 240ish kbps (2mb cable)

It all depends on how many seeders and leechers. Generally, if there are ALOT, youll get a great speed.
Like way back when, when I downloaded the family guy movie. There was what, 7000 seeds and 5000 leechers or something like that? Then it got to 2000 seeds and 3000 leechers. If I had the speed I have now back then, id certainly get 200-300 KBPS.

It varies a lot. Sometimes it maxes my 10Mbps connection, other times it's pretty slow, average seems to be at a couple hundred kbps. I guess it depends both on how many others there are, what connections they have and how far away from you they are. All of this applies to both upload and download speed.
I used to have a connection with almost no upload at all. Comparing the crappy speeds I got then to the decent speeds I get now when my upload is equal to my download. It almost seems like BT downloads prioritates those with high upload speed over those with low upload speed.

ya, thats how it works. the upload totally bottlenecks your download if you dont share enough. it is made like this so that the more people there are using it, the faster everyone will download. its a very cool system. for something like a linux distro where ftp servers get swamped on release day, it works very well.

Aside from what everyone else has already said, I've also read that you can increase download speed by changing your router configuration. One place to read about this is:

Hmmm, the reason I don't keep my torrent program open (and don't use it) is because the speeds are so slow. I thought it was because my upload speeds are so slow I thought other people must have the same problem so my download speeds are slow.
If I put up my web server and have people try and download something they complain of the slow speed.
