I tried using apt-get nstall build essential but it says build-essential not found. I'm using Ubuntu 6.10 if that matters.

Could you show the exact command that you entered, and the error(s) that you got? Copy-and-paste from your terminal to the forum would be best.

Command:
sudo apt-get install build-essential

Error:
E: couldn't find package build-essential

Edgy Eft isn't supported anymore. You won't get any software updates an I doubt that the repositories for it are still up.
You should upgrade to a more recent release like 8.04 (codename: Hardy Heron).

How do I upgrade from 6.10 to 8? Does 8 require a better graphics card? I know I couldn't run 7.10 because of graphics, but they might have fixed that in 8.

There are several ways to upgrade, use google to find out about them.
But don't forget to back up important files first.

Thanks. I'll just wipe this hard disk and install Hardy Heron.

That is one way to do it and the cleanest one. :)
Don't forget to backup important data.

I did. I put important files on my flash drive.

Ubuntu 8.04 wouldn't work on my computer, so I'm going to try Xubuntu now!
