View Full Version : [ubuntu] [SOLVED] internet connection/file sharing from ubuntu 2 winXP

OK, I don't know if I should post this here or in the Wubi forum since that is my current install. Also, this may be a long post, but I'll try to keep it basically to the facts.

I have been lurking Ubuntu since the 6.xx release as it is supposed to be the better solution for networking. Sorry that I don't reference the actual 'names' of Ubuntu releases. Anyway, here are my system(s). One laptop running XP pro sp2, not really important except I use it on the road w/tethering to my cell phone and remote desktop if needed. The other two are my main computers, one is my 'beast' (or server), the other my desktop, both running XP pro sp2, switched via a KVM. My server (beast) runs two PIII's, has 4g RAM, six HD's with about 1.5tbit of storage, an on board eth connected to the net, an additional eth card direct connected to my 'desktop' with a crossover cable with ICS. I started looking into Ubuntu when I had to re-hardware my beast last, but I got win working fairly easily for both comps. Oh, and BTW, the beast runs apache for my live server as well.

Anyway, I know I've left alot of details out, but AX-MEN is on and I've gotta go, and everytime I've searched "internet connection sharing" I've came up with a dozen different answers, so I thought I'd start a new post/question. I did try the 'ifconfig' method for ICS, but . . . . I got a 'permission denied' message from terminal.

I guess I should get to the point, which should I do first. Samba for file sharing, or try one of the one or two dozen methods of getting ICS working?

I don't know anything about 'net connection sharing, but as far as Samba goes, here (http://del.icio.us/xiong.chiamiov/samba) are the two guides I used.

Also, the term you are looking for is "cracked (http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/C/crack.html)". There are plenty of people around here who hack (http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/H/hacker.html) on a regular basis, but would not like to the two things to be confused. That, and, while we don't pay for software, we also don't steal it; mentioning such things can bring the mods down on your head.

OK, thanks, but when I've tried to get ICS working using either the ifconfig method or installing firestarter, I haven't had success yet. So again the question is should I keep trying to get ICS to work first or should I install/setup sambe first.

BTW, my server has a built-in NIC plus an addition nic, my destop (client) is hooked to the server with NIC's with a crossover cable.

thanks in advance,
