I am so excited about this release. I have already installed it and I love it.

The themes and wallpapers it comes with are nice.

Mint has been pretty awesome for me. I love how it is going to be as some say "sorta rolling"

Thanks for the info, been waiting for the final release. My opinion is that Linux Mint is the best out there.

Yall reckon they will have a KDE version I have gotten the hang of this KDE stuff and I enjoy it more than gnome now.

Yes but it might be a wait for it. I just install the KDE right on the Gnome one.

I'm really impressed with how far Linux Mint has come. It's so very far from the "ubuntu with codecs" moniker of the early days.

Yeah, they usually do a KDE version later on down the road for all the kde fans.

Can't wait to download this. Kubuntu 8 supported my HD audio but stopped when I tried to add codecs. Never figured out adding DVD support either.

It was a wonderful release. I am still using the last RC version of Linux Mint 5.0 Eyssa. It runs near flawlessly. I have done an update or upgrade all via their package manager, another front-end to synaptic, but nice looking and easy to use.

I really love the look snazzy feel, polish and beauty of the distro. The menu looks much better now, and I wont change much of a thing. There is better integration b/w icon sets even in firefox browser, etc. I'm sure Ubuntu is just as great when altered.

My question, is the KDe install on Mint going to be like Kubuntu-desktop install or is it different or customized for Mint. In all I give a whoping huge thumbs up to this distro. And a huge thank you to their base, Ubuntu - lets not forget credit to Debian as well.

I'm installing it now. The one thing that really is making me switch is that the LTS (this release) will have programs backported to it as they become available, unlike Ubuntu.

I have it downloaded, looking forward to installing it. Mint, PCLinuxOS and Ultimate (formerly Ubuntu Ultimate Edition) are the best unless you are a Slackware or Gentoo kind of user - I am not, I don't want to have to mess around at all -

You are assuming that all users need all codecs installed by default...
And that default software installed on Mint it's the needed by anyone.

I never have all installed on any distro i have... and always need to uninstall a bunch of apps and install my ones.
For me it looks a lot OTB :)

The Out-of-the-box idea it's a myth that can only applies for a percentage of users and even that percentage it's high, it can't satisfy all needs never...

Well I've been using it for a couple of days on the Laptop, and I think it's great (up to now :)). It even recognized my Freecom DVB Stick (yes I know that's probably the kernel and not Mint, but it was a pleasant surprise). It all seems polished, responsive and stable. I hope they are not famous last words. :)

Well, that's just a result of including binary drivers, which is a bit of a gray area. For the end user this aspect is of little relevance, but for an actual company like Canonical it is a little tricky. Mint has an advantage here.

Mint's very sexy looking. It's only visuals and Ubuntu's default look is easy to change, but first impressions are important.

How can the distro be "sorta rolling" if they relay on Ubuntu's repositories, though?

I don't know, the Linux Mint page says there are no binary drivers in it.

Running here with 2.6.24-18-generic kernel. Everything works great. I still think of it as spicy ubuntu.

Without ubuntu linux mint would'n exist. Everything from repos works. Envy comes by default. What I dislike is Firefox google search engine. But it can be changed in

/usr/share/firefox/searchplugins ##firefox 2
/usr/lib/firefox-addons/searchplugins ##firefox 3

(google.xml file)

It is my favorite distro. (2. is pclos - fast mandriva :))

Updates and stuff for newer programs for future OS's will get backported to Elyssa. So it updates with the newer versions.

Not completely true. Mint had a test/preview version that was based on Debian, so if Ubuntu died tomorrow and the Mint devs wanted, they could just base it off of Debian.

Important Security Notice - mintAssistant 2.4 in Elyssa!

Postby clem on Wed Jun 11, 2008 9:51 pm
A very important bug has been found in mintAssistant 2.4 which was released as part of Linux Mint 5 Elyssa.

Explanation

When the root password is not set the root account is still active, and rather than this consequently preventing any root login, it actually means you can login as root without any password at all.

Cause

This regression is due to a change in behavior in passwd from Gutsy to Hardy and a request from the community after RC1 was released not to lock the root account (so that "sudo su -" is still possible).

Solution

I've never tried Linux mint assuming it was just another one of these "Ubuntu based distro's with codecs pre-installed" as someone else put it, but reading the comments I'm intrigued to try it out, it probably wont work with my USB Wifi dongle out of the box though... is there a DVD version? so I can install Ndiswrapper or can I just use the ubuntu DVD? (As it's primarily based off it)

OK I'm now seriously considering ditching Ubuntu for Linux mint! it's so much more well rounded and faster! I'm totally agreeing with "from freedom came elegance".
Running it off the live CD is just as fast as my Ubuntu install! everything works out of the box just like it says *Shocked* when did Linux get this good?

they fixed this, all you have to do now is download the revision 1 .iso or if you already have mint 5 installed, update mintassistant to 2.5

my only issue with mint 5 is that the GDM login screen has a low resolution that doesn't cover my entire screen but there has been a lot of GDM login issues in the known bugs section so I'm sure this will be promptly addressed.

is linux mint a lot different than ubuntu?

knavarathna92
June 23rd, 2008, 08:34 PM
not totally different, linux mint was originally based on ubuntu and thus uses ubuntu repos but mint offers a little extra. It's a little faster, has a neat way to install software with a search function to search getdeb, aptget and the software portal. The software portal contains .mint files which easily install software (1-click) on to your computer. I've installed frostwire, google earth, gdesklets and skype this way. Incidentally, Frostwire didn't work on any ubuntu version for me. The updates are also divided into levels of safety from 1-5 with 1 being the safest. Less problems FTW. Finally, You've probably already gathered that it works with essentially all types of media out of the box.

wolfen69
June 24th, 2008, 01:15 AM
well, linuxmint failed me for the first time tonight. i was doing a job for someone and wanted to take a shortcut on the install time. it wouldnt run correctly. so i popped in regular ubuntu and bam! perfect install.

but mint still has a pretty good track record with me though.

Mint was very nice except it's a bit behind in video support compared to ubuntu for intel integrated graphics, even with compiz off it's not that great.

OpenSuse so far has the smoothest video play for my laptop except it doesn't work with compiz yet.

I dont know what they did if anything at all, but Mint is less buggy and takes up less RAM from boot. For me Mint uses 160mb on boot, ubuntu was in the 200's. Strange when you consider Mint's menu alone takes up 20mb i good chunk more then the default gnome menu.
