I am trying to setup a PPP connection over a serial null modem cable to a windows98 computer to get it online (TCP/IP). I need to know how to do this in detail .i am aware this is a large undertaking and the connection will be bad, but i don't care.the host is a Ubuntu 8.04 desktop, how do i do this?

here is the dilemma. i have an old computer that i want to get online(or at least TCP/IP networking) but it has no Ethernet port...or modem, blue tooth,Wifi or anything. the only thing it has is a serial port and i have a null modem cable(like from the picture but much longer). all other computers i have have Ethernet ports and are setup with static IP addresses. i want to setup any one of the networking computers as a gate way for this computer and all references have mentioned slip and ppp but no one seems to be able to explain how to do it.

im about to give up here.
another picture to try and show what im talking about with my general setup shown

* switch was bought broken and i never bothered to bring it back
** new computer has a WifiMax wireless USB dongle that my ps3 uses

currently my server is being a pain trying to route to the old desktop.
The laptop has windows 98. all google searches have told me the way to do this is to make the server look like a serial port modem
which is something like this http://www.planetmicro.co.uk/upload/product_images/100/M000055.jpg, but they fail to really explain what programs are needed and how to configure them.
please help or send me to the right forum because this is the 5th post strait I have made.

I would like to know how to connect two machines using a serial cable and SLIP without a modem - all the info I have found seems to think slip is irretreivably bound up in modems as well.
I'd like to do this so I can renovate old machines without taking them apart by sharing the Internet over the Serial Line.
