Well I gave it a good try . got lots of great replies to my threads about problems using my Epson 1670 with Xsane , I have followed all the advice and I am now confident that I have done everything right ( the right.bin file in the right place, snap.conf modified correctly etc )
But the scanner still wont work unless I wake it up with Windows first .
I have learned a lot trying , but now think if I want to use Ubuntu I will have to get another scanner. Does anyone know of a scanner that will work without delving in to the bowels of Ubuntu ?

You may not want an all-in-one, but I have an all-in-one hp f4185printer/scanner/fax and it installs automatically upon installation of the system files and the printer and scanner functions work (never tried faxing). HP provide good linux support, especially for debian based distro's. Check out their site for linux compatible scanners/printers etc - nearly all models (of printers at least) are catered for.
