View Full Version : [ubuntu] 8.04 hangs during boot, then restarts itself.

I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 530 desktop, which comes pre-loaded with Gutsy. The first thing I did upon getting this new machine was upgrade to Hardy, and everything seemed to go perfectly. Then, upon re-boot, the Ubuntu loading splash screen hangs for several minutes and the computer restarts itself. This cycle continues ad infinitum. The login screen never appears.

Any ideas? I'm fairly new to Ubuntu, so please bear that in mind when answering. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

My machine's details are below, for what it's worth:

Inspiron 530, Intel Pentium Dual Core processor E2180 (2.00GHz, 800FSB)
2GB DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz
128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8300GS
320GB Serial ATA 2 Hard Drive (7200RPM)
Integrated NIC card
16X DVD+/-RW Drive
Integrated Audio

Moved to Dell Ubuntu Support.

Boot into GRUB, press esc upon start up. Change to an kernel (recovery mode) or an older kernel.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried hitting ESC and changing to an older kernel and my computer was indeed able to boot into Hardy. The screen resolution wasn't correct, however (640x480 when it should have been 1440x900). The restricted driver was properly installed and noted as "In Use."

Ideas?
