Removing flash drive safely

If I plug in a USB flash drive in windows when I am done using it i can "Safely Remove" it from my computer after i click on the Safely Removal Hardware icon in the bottom left of my screen. How can i safely remove a flash drive in ubuntu?

Right click the drive on the Desktop and Unmount Volume

ok, thats what i thought but i wasn't sure if unmounting was the same thing. thanks!
