Hi guys.

I did a bit of server consolidation. Combined a blackberry and timeclock polling servers into one using Debian and VMWare. No gui, just sits there and hosts those two VMs. Works very well. Simple setup, RAID1, 8 gigs of memory, Debian 64 (to use that extra memory). I like it a lot. Was very easy to setup using Debian.

My question is, what are some other solid server distros that you guys are familiar with? I used Ubuntu as a server distro at one time. It was nice that VMware was right in the repoes. But it turns out Ubuntu has trouble booting a RAID when a member is missing. So, what other server distros you guys use? From I understand, Debian is indeed one of the best.

Agree. The Debian team carefully releases their patches and the OS footprint itself is very less making it very invulnerable. Rocky-rock-solid, indeed!

You see, Ubuntu is based on Debian and for production servers, the LTS releases are strongly recommended. Its a popular distro and the biggest advantage is it's community support. Ubuntu Forums is one of the most "active" support forums in this world. One of the main reasons why you shud choose Ubuntu Server Edition!
