Hello all.
I do not have any antivirus on my Ubuntu now.
I have a laptop that is my companys. I would like to put some different backgrounds on it but dont want to access the internet from it incase of a trojan or virus.
I am looking for a nice antivirus that I can run on ubuntu, turn it on when I feel like it, scan the files for my laptop and then turn it back off. I dont want anything that is going to run in the background all of the time.
Thanks in advance.

Hey there!
Ubuntu, being a UNIX system, has no viruses. Therefore no anti-virus is needed. Basically, it's a lot more secure, and less used, so people don't even try to make viruses.
If you want to scan files before you send them off to a Windows computer so you don't infect co-workers, I suggest Avast! Antivirus:

Download the DEB package, and you're ready to install!

ClamAV will probably be what you want.

Get clam anti-virus from synaptic. Anti-virus is not really necessary on linux, as there are no wild viruses that infect it. If you are sharing with a windows drive it is wise to scan files before sending them to windows, but at this point in time, anti-virus is not necessary with linux.
Clam does what you want ie doesn't work in the background and will scan individual files etc. There is a later engine available than what is in the repositories which you can compile if you wish.

There is not the same risk of viruses with Linux as there is with Windows because of the difference in design philosphies. Probably the biggest reason for considering antivirus with Linux is to help prevent accidentally sending one to a Windows user, which could violate some ISPs terms of service.
I have free versions AVG on both my Windows & Ubuntu systems.
