With that spec, I'd suggest Xubuntu on the *buntu side. I've not used Mepis, so no thoughts there, but if it works for you and you're satisfied with it, stay with it.

Either would work fine for you. Since you already have Mepis installed, just use it.
I used Mepis for a month before switching to Ubuntu.

Agree with the previous posts - whatever works for you> I've been using Ubuntu for the last couple of years - picked up an old laptop the other day, DBAN'ed it, and chucked on Mepis. Works like a charm - 1gig, 256 meg of RAM, and it's fine. Very happy with it :)

Using mepis wont be that much different then using ubuntu as both are debian based, only Mepis is based on "true" debian.
The two are comparible, though there are no desktop effects in Mepis

Does this mean Ubuntu is based on false Debian?

I put the quotes in there as many dont think ubuntu is "true" debian

But in all serious, both are very good at their jobs.
Also both have very good communities, the Mepis community is one of the most friendly out there.

I second that mepis is great. I love these distros and many others. Mepis maybe a little lighter or the same. Ubuntu is based on Debian, but has its own packages that may or may not be compatible with debian, and vice versa.
They are both very robust. Debian is very proven though. Right now, I am playing more with Linux Mint which is based on Ubuntu.
