Which version did you burn 64bit or 32bit? if 64bit then try 32bit, if 32bit try another bootable cd, windows or ubuntu live cd

I'm using the Live cd I believe. I've tried the alternate, but it doesn't work.

The version I'm trying to use is 8.04

sounds like it could possible be that ubuntu doen't now how to communicate with your hardware... but that's a maybe at best. I would install windows, that way you can make sure all your hardware is functioning fine then from inside windows put the cd in, not sure this will work with a live cd but the full version 32 bit is what I would suggest using. then it should prompt you for a full install or dual boot option. try full install if it works, there you go if not try the dual boot option, if neiter means that ubuntu isn't compatable with your hardware, I would have to guess... to re-cap:

install windows (this will make sure your hardware is fine + you can atleast start it to install from with in windows or dual boot)
