Dell XPS M1710 and Hardy with sound issues

I am a new Linux user. I have Hardy Heron installed on my laptop and it is running pretty well except that the sound system is not supporting the mic. Unfortunately, I require a mic for an application for work. Can anyone help me to get this working? A friend suggested compiling ALSA from source, but I have never done that. Any help is appreciated.
