I am a long time console gamer and am really interested in the FPS genre but have literally no experience with it at all. Could anyone recommend a fairly simple entry level FPS which will run on a laptop with onboard (intel 965) graphics and fairly modest specs and perhaps a guide to some of the fps terminology/game types/how to play without getting utterly spanked in 10 seconds.

Stick with one of the top 3.
Quake,
Halflife
Unreal.
Any of the latest versions should do.

Here (http://gaming.gwos.org/doku.php/games:fps#first_person_shooter) you can find a bunch of FPS you can play natively on Ubuntu. As for starters you can start with Open Arena. You can select the level you want and you can play with bots. Then Urban Terror is great and there are great players online. Definitely check out Warsow and Nexuiz. Warsow has special jumps and both of them have great graphics. Also World of Padman is very fun.
