I'm having the same problem and I can't tell if there is something going with the Power Management of the laptop. It seems to work fine from CD but as soon as it is fully installed it fails.
I was able to get all the way through and installation of Compiz-fusion, but as soon as I restarted the computer would automatically power itself off.
I'm still looking into it, as I'm trying to get away from Windows.

*edit*

Even though is isn't directly Ubunutu related it does indicate what universally could be happening with the ACPI.

See this bug report (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/242400) for a likely solution. (In a nutshell: upgrade the laptop's BIOS)
