I have never used SUSE, but I hear it is good. Ubuntu is really easy to use when configured properly.
I hear Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu) is a really nice distro.

OpenSUSE is basically Microsoft Linux..... So if you want to feed lawyers and help Linux die, by all means use "Open"Suse. Read the EULA and you will not feel so happy about Suse....
http://news.cnet.com/Microsoft-makes-Linux-pact-with-Novell/2100-1016_3-6132119.html
Personally I think the allegation of patent violation are completely baseless and it doesn't amount to much more than the pile of dung that lawyers create daily.....
:lolflag:
I'm by no means a FSF dillhole (more open source kinda guy) but I disagree with what SUSE has done.
All in all, Ubuntu dwarfs Suse from every other aspect.

This debate has a thread already. (the installation that is, which for openSUSE is pretty slow.)

As for functionability, it's really what you want / what machine you're using.
A fairly good website that describes the basic differences is here (http://blog.linuxoss.com/2007/12/03/quotes-opensuse-vs-ubuntu-you-pick-what-you-desire/),

Ubuntu is one of the easiest distros to install, and lots of help in the forums and documentation.

I do NOT use Suse or OpenSuse mainly because of Novell and their deal with M$ and not because it's a bad distro.
I recommend you to use Ubuntu because of the community that have the nerves to answer the very same noob questions on daily bases ;)

I would recommend taking anything said here with a grain of salt, seeing that it is the Ubuntu forums.
That said, forgetting the licensing issues, I prefer Ubuntu because it works and has a lot of nice features. It runs well and the forums are open with a lot of people willing to support and help.

I'd say Ubuntu or one of its derivatives. My experience with SUSE was unsatisfactory namely during the installation/hardware configuration part. Ubuntu pretty much just works out of the box.
Another distro I'd recommend is BLAG, moreso even than Mint.

I've tried OpenSuse and the interface it's bad. The control panel is nice, it is a bit slow to respond when you click.
I threw my copy in the garbage after the head ache I had to go through to get a winmodem working. I said to myself "why go through all of this headache when Ubuntu just works)
I favor Ubuntu but I think either would be a fine choice.

I've used both.
If you like KDE, use openSUSE. If you like gnome, use ubuntu.
Other than that, ubuntu's better at configuring wireless.

ubuntu is really really easy, especially it's made for all ages.
and it handles all the tasks that you want to do
(browsing,programming,writing,chatting,watching tv,easy updates,secure,fast....).

I think that it's also important not to overlook the community resources when choosing a distribution. Ubuntu Forums, whatever it's shortcomings, is easily the best distro-forum on the web. (Obviously the vast majority of Linux know-how is distribution independent, but for a first time user it's very important that they have a go-to resource).

A lot of the disadvantages of openSUSE are being addressed in openSUSE 11, coming out in 16 days.
The three largest english forums are combining to make a decent sized forum (still no match for ubuntu of course).
And the #1 priority has been speeding up package management, which is traditionally openSUSE's biggest weakness.
To be honest I use openSUSE cause I think it's kind of sexy.

In all of my tests, Kubuntu has been horrendously slow when compared to almost any other distro. Regular Ubuntu is faster than most Windows installs, but it's getting pretty chunky too.

i love my opensuse install, it takes for ever to install somethings but not as long as it takes to compile them from source, which i prefer to do most of the time anyways, but they have optimized code for kde, openoffice, the gimp and a few other programs which make them load significantly faster then they do on my ubuntu computer, so if you can put up with the long install time, it pays dividends in terms of reaction time of programs in the long run, and even better is in the betas of opensuse 11, they go alot faster now so im hoping high in 15 days the final will be even better
and as far as software that can run on it:
http://software.opensuse.org/search
theyre usually alot more upto date than the ubuntu repos and i do love the one click install thing, even though its more like 10 clicks
as for the deal with microsoft i have no problem with it, i mean honestly, agreeing to not sue each other over patent infringement and all the money they agreed to change hand, 350 million to novell, 48 to be paid to ms over 3 years, novell with opensuse just netted 302 million, and use it well, they are one of the biggest supporters of a ton of linux and opensource projects, and if for no other reason, novell created and funds mono and i cant hate them at all after that

For a new user to Linux I would recommend PCLinuxOS or Mint.
