God I hope they do this. If they do do it, and there's no major performance hit, my XP boot will be getting very lonely.
Though I probably spend more time playing CoD2/4 than I do playing Source based games but that would prob change if I could just fire TF2 up while in Ubuntu rather than rebooting into XP.
I noticed in the comments from that link that some guy is saying it's not worth Valve supporting the low end machines that (apparently, not sure if it's true) makes up the majority of PC's running Linux. The fact is if you look at any recent Steam survey (which are freely available on the website, www.steampowered.com) you'll find that the majority of Steam customers are using low-end/older hardware anyway.
Heres hoping they go through with this, and UT3 would be an excellent launch title for the steam client :D

This is old news, but it's nice to see someone being optimistic about Valve on Linux for once. :)

Yep, Phoronix got the stuff covering too. My wallet is waitin'. (don't have a single valve game, didn't play them on windows either before).

steam != source
If they are porting the source games then they will probably port the steam content transfer system, but that doesnt mean everything listed on steam will be available on linux.
Your UT3 example a case in point - Its an unreal game, so Epic need to get off their fat asses and sort out/finish the linux port first.
NB. You may already have known this, I'm just making clear to others - A port of steam and source games doesn't mean you get a port of everything that's on the windows client.

It was pointed out recently by one of the Steam User Forum Moderators (and they have regular contact with Valve) that the position for the Linux programmer has been up there for years.
In light of that, it seems unlikely that Steam or any Valve games will come to Linux (Besides, can you imagine the support headache that would cause?). The Source engine may well be ported for use by other companies, but any Valve game and the Steam client will probably not.
I've heard stories on the Steam User Forums of people being banned from them because they kept asking if a Linux version of Steam was going to be created after they'd been told no quite a number of times by Valve employees. These banned users kept making new threads, asking the same questions, arguing the same points before they were banned.
So, Source = yes (but not likely anytime soon), Steam/Counterstrike/Half-Life 2/Team Fortress 2 = no.
