Sorry if this is a total newby question but how do I solve this?

You need a version of libSDL that is configured for use with X11 graphics and sound.

libsdl1.2debian-alsa*.deb works.

Now the game starts but stops returning the following in terminal:

I did what were said in the thread but it still not works... :(
I've got a Geforce 5200 with nvidia drivers (quake3 works fine but sound problems) that doesn't appear to have any problem of config...

I had a similar problem and deleting the .quake4 directory in hidden files solved it for me

I had the same error, this worked for me. Rename Quake4Config.cfg in the /home/username/.quake4/q4base directory. WARNING: The game will go back to default settings.

Just a question for you guys...did you set your antialiasing? I set mine and soon as I did the game quit working...I then had to go into the quake4config.cfg and reset the antialiasing to 0.

No need to delete whole .quake4 dir!

Just edit Quake4Config.cfg and delete all these lines:

seta image_*
seta r_*

Save and run Quake4. You have to do your video configuration again.
