View Full Version : IPod to TV 3rd party cable. Price gouging

I wanted to get videos from my IPod to play from my TV. I saw the Apple Cable at Best Buy for $53. That price for a simple A/V cable is ridiculous. Not even Radio Shack price gouges that much for accessories.

I have an IPod 80G Classic which has the TV out firmware locked so that cheaper 3rd party TV out cables dont work.

Does anyone know a way around this or am I stuck either having to pay a ridiculous amount for a stupid cable?

No help to you, but a good heads up for me as I was looking at a replacement for my 60gb.

After some googling, it will be a long time before I put money apples way. They are turning into the pirates of the electronic era. I can take them charging more for Macs that are little more than Pc's in nice cases (but with a good OS!). But stopping people using standard av kit is beyond a joke. Their attempt last time round by putting the outputs on non standard (coloured) leads was enough, but easy to get round. Though I'm sure many paid out for the overpriced apple av lead with the cables swapped round!

sorry for the rant

I regret getting this damn IPod. Its been nothing but an empty wallet to get full function out of it.

For other people who have an older IPod locked out I did find a simple work around. Apple was sneaky by changing the colors of the A/V outputs. Switch the yellow to yellow: TO yellow to red.

In other words plug the red output cable into the yellow video on the TV.

Sadly this does not work for me because mine is totally locked out as it is newer. If you are using 5.5 generation it should work though.

This doesn't help you either, but when I e-mailed Apple to ask how to (and eventually complain that I can't) watch my purchased iTMS videos on my TV, they told me to buy an iPod and one of those cables.
