Hey i just wonder if anyone can help me out. im looking for a good media player for GNOME. I hear alot of people say XMMS but i hate it cos its so basic and theres no features to connect ur mp3 player and synchronize it and theres no media library feature.
So far amarok is the best i've found and exaile but amarok takes so long to load and slows everything down while doing so (maybe cos i have a large library or maybe my computer is just slow now) and exaile just doesnt cut it for me cos im used to the winamp and amarok interfaces. (too iTunesey)
so is there anything else i can get that supports large libraries and has a media library section with a nice GUI to go with it?

thx. trying out soundbird and listen. soundbird is almost identical to itunes but i like the layout of the media library. built in web browser too almost like amarok so i can search for my lyrics without having to run firefox.

If amarok is running slow, it's probably due to the size of your library and using the default (sqlite) database engine. If you set up amarok to use MySQL or PostgreSQL you will see huge performance gains. Here is a nice how-to (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/linux/speed-up-amarok-with-large-music-collections/) on how to set up amarok to use mysql.

Amarok's start time is slow when you use it in Gnome, as with most programs designed to run in a KDE environment.
My music player of choice is XMMS. It's fast, reliable, skinnable, and it works great. Seriously, it takes no time at all to manually add your music player's directory to the playlist... Faster than it takes to load up Amarok or wait for Audacious to find all the tags and times for your MP3s :)

Its a toss between audacious and amarok.
amarok is great for itunes users as its interface is similar and it does fairly well with ipods.
audacious is a continuation of the XMMS project as XMMS is all but dead, great for winamp fans.

i'll have a look at XMMS again but i still like seeing a library where i can select my artists rather than one long playlist with everything in it.
i just installed the KDE and XFCE desktops on my Fedora and my Ubuntu is down at the moment (was following a tutorial on optimizing it but i must have botched something up) so i'll see how amarok runs for me in KDE. Otherwise i'll just use the MySQL setup.
thanks for the tips. not at home so i cant try it out yet but i'll let u know how it goes.

I like Rhythmbox... It's not a flash as Amarok but it's much faster and easier to use.

I like Rhythmbox a lot. Once you setup Amarok with MySQL it works a lot faster. but Amarok and Exaile get all the ID3 tags wrong and create albums from other albums and it is a mess. I am almost about to log into the MySQL database and fix all the problems. Rhythmbox gets it all correct.

Yeh, songbird is pretty nice, though its still early in its lifespan.
