Hello everybody:
If you have a preintalled Inspiron (with gutsy), maybe you'll be interested in my experience:
I took the choice: I wanted to have Hardy, and I used the upgrade tool. Then I followed the solutions provided in dell-linux forums (http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_8.04). Th result: Hardy worked fine, without troubles (compiz ok, awn ok, firefox ok but keep and eye on your extensions, openoffice.org really fine, etc.), and I was very happy.
After a couple of days, the automatic upgrade suggest a new kernel, 2.6.24-17 (Gutsy is 2.6.22, Hardy start with 2.6.24-16). Please DON'T DO THAT. Just stay in Hardy without that ultimate upgrades, by two reasons at least:
- We don't have yet the official images of hardy, from dell-ubuntu developers
- The solutions suggested in forums doesn't work with 2.6.22-17 kernel (it's too soon). I lost sound and modem in the last attempt...
So: if you want to have Hardy, upgrade to Hardy, but SLOWLY..., read the details of the suggested packages in the upgrade tool. Enjoy

Get free. Get Linux.

I have a Inspiron 1420n as well and I went through similar issues when upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy. I've pretty much made my mind up I'll stick w/ Gutsy until Dell releases their custom Ubuntu images. Keep an eye on the sticky thread here in the Ubuntu Dell sub-forum, I'll try to keep it up to date as they update the Dell Linux Wiki page. =]

guys,
I have the inspiron 1420 and I just did a fresh install of Hardy, via a CD, not the upgrade manager, every single thing worked perfectly except the wireless light, and the Dell Wiki solution via the backports fixed that.

I am not sure if Dell will be releasing a custom image, as the stock Hardy Ubuntu ISO worked great.

Just a heads up, and the Compiz stuff looks fantastic with the Intel on board video.

I'd not wait for the image, mine is working perfectly.

Same here on a 1520, everything worked fine, upgrades IMO never work right. Just wipe and go
