View Full Version : The Average User is not ready for Ubuntu

I’ve had the same dad for many years, and admitantly, he is a bit antiquated. As the years have gone by, I’ve noticed that he runs slower and slower, and try as I might to change this, I can’t stop the progression of time. He’s been using Windows for a while, but with Vista being included in most computers, I decided that it may be a little too graphically intense for him. He just doesn’t have the memory for it. So I switched his computer over to Ubuntu. What a nightmare.

He couldn’t work with the network applet, figuring out how to get him to compile programs was a pain, and he had irreconcilable incompatibilities with Compiz.

So naturally I went out on the internet looking for a solution, and found this forum. After browsing through here, I can tell this is a reoccurring issue. The Average User just isn’t ready for Ubuntu, and frankly, that pisses me. For years I’ve been hearing about the flexibility, the wide range of hardware support, and the overall superiority of the average user but I feel like I’ve been lied to after seeing its performance on Ubuntu. (I have thought about switching to Dog (a little too trendy for my tastes), or the lesser known Iguana, but after reading the supposed benefits of the Average User, I figured he would be better suited for the Desktop experience)

I’m REALLY frustrated, and I’d like to lodge a complaint with the maker of the Average User. Does anyone have his/her/its/their email? That’s another thing that drives me CRAZY! Whenever I have a problem that I can’t solve, and no one can help me with, I usually try to get in contact with the manufacturer. Common sense, right? Problem is, no one can seem to give me a straight answer as to who makes this Average User! And talk about sloppy documentation….I’ve found hundreds of help files/texts, most of which don’t make any sense and are totally contradictory, but not one single phone number, address, or email. You think whoever made these things would have taken the time and energy to solve these SIMPLE issues, but apparently that is too much to ask. Ubuntu is NOT complicated. It’s actually quite straightforward. How can the performance of the Average User be THIS bad? I don’t know what they were thinking when they said, “The Average User is ready for Ubuntu”, because obviously that’s a lie. They need to get off their butts and fix this.

So anyways, I’m sorry guys, since I can’t seem to get my Dad to work with Ubuntu, I guess I’m just going to have to back to Windows. :(

(This is a joke, for the record)

Why was he compiling? Get him a distro that has everything setup. Try PCLinuxOS (run the updates) or OpenSUSE. You don't have to use Compiz.

If you think the average user isn't ready for Ubuntu, I can assure you, they aren't ready for Windows. The secret is that it has to be setup for them. Get yourself a Vista (or XP) and some Linux distros. Now, go see which is easier to install and setup.

The average user isn't ready for computers in that they can't (and aren't really expected) to be able to do anything besides use it. I like comparing computers to cars.

I'm sorry about your experience. Have you posted your questions? Often, it works a lot better than just reading, because it allows members to try to match your situation.

Anyhow, if your dad had been using Windows and is unable to switch from XP, I don't see why he should. Ubuntu's just an alternative, that's all.

My grandparents had trouble with WinXP when they got their first computer, and I'd consider them above average, but they were good with a bit of help setting everything up. I don't think there's anything wrong with the average Joe, and lots of people have trouble with computing in general ;p

(joke follows)

btw, you might want to install more memory. The processor is important, but sometimes memory is the bottleneck...

Just so people don't miss this part, I've highlighted it

I haven't missed it; hence, the addition of a reason.

Will that help him run faster? Last time we had a foot race I beat him by a mile... not like the old days. Use to move faster back then.
