Problem with pppoeconf on a iMac G3

Hello All

I installed xubuntu 7.10 on an old G3 iMac and after the usuall problems everything worked really well.

Now after the installation the vpn-software vpnc the computer doesn't connect to the internet directly after the boot. I can connect with pppoeconf. The connection will work then but pppoeconf gives me the following error:

Access concentrator of your provider did not respond,pls check your network and modem. Another reason for the scan failure may also be another running pppoe process which controls the modem.

So pppoeconf will get me an internetconnection despite the errormessage, but I have to to this everytime I start the computer. And I had no problems bevor installing vpnc (I don't know if this is a coincidence).

I would be happy for any suggestions where my problem could be.
