To create an XP image, insert the XP setup disk, open Brasero, select Disk Copy and set the destination drive as "File Image"
Also, install the gues module for the kernel version you are currently using. Check by:

uname -a

no need for all that. uninstall what you have and go HERE (https://cds.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/CDS-CDS_SMI-Site/en_US/-/USD/ViewProductDetail-Start?ProductRef=innotek-1.6-G-F@CDS-CDS_SMI) . one click install. plus this version has usb support.

For the virtualbox problems, you only need to do two things:

Install the proper kernel module (there's only one you need to install) and add your name to the list of vboxusers.

To get the proper module (and I'm assuming that you're using the default generic kernel), use this command:

sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.24-16-generic
To add yourself to the vboxusers group:

System -> Administration -> Users and Groups
(after unlocking, if you're using 8.04) Click on "Manage Groups"
Scroll to the bottom. Double click on "vboxusers"
Check your name and close your way out.

There you go.

I had that problem on versions 1.5.6 and 1.6.0, but version 1.5.4 works fine for me. I have used 1.5.4 on both gutsy and hardy without issue. By the way, other users have put bug reports in to sun/innotek about the inability to grab the virtual mouse - so it is not only you and I that have had problems.

Yeah, bumanie, I have v. 1.6.0, is there anyway to get v. 1.5.4 ? I checked
the Sun page, but it seems they only have the new version.

I typed virtualbox 1.5.4 into a search engine. 99% of the sites which said they had that version, in fact didn't and sent you back to the sun site. I eventually found it on a japanese site I came across. Basically, patience and lots of searching, but it can be found.

Unfortunately I'm at work, but I will have a quick search and see if I can find the site again.

Why don't you try installing the real virtualbox and follow my directions? It's not hard...

Try this one and get the gutsy version, it should work on hardy.
http://blog.pixnet.net/copact/post/5289913 or try this one
请输入关键字 or here (gutsy version) http://www.lug.or.kr/home/bbs/board.php?bo_table=talk&wr_id=124
Sorry can't do any better as I have to work again.

PS: You could try a torrent site someone may be still sharing the older version.

The ose version doesn't give usb support. The binary, free for home use version, does provide usb support.

It is not *that* hard to find old versions of virtualbox. A google search turns up several sites on the first page :
