quick question about installing ubuntu

if i install ubuntu over my vista partition, will ubuntu format the partition and install over vista, deleting vista and everything?

If you install on the very same partition as your Vista resides on, you will get everything regarding Vista removed.

A different filesystem is used, therefore a drive/partition has to be formatted. No information from the previous OS will be left.

Read up on partitions in the sticky section, that will save your Vista partition and allow you to dual boot.

If you use the Wubi installer, you can install on your vista without it overwriting.
