When I drag a theme from gnomelook I am alwaystold The file format is invalid. I dont extract the files rather drag the tar.gz file into the themes dialog... I have tried 68239-minty-stripes.tar.gz, 77256-minty_gnome.tar.gz, 75283-debian beauty.tar.gz, none of which have worked.
Whats going on? I ave dapper 64 with no desktop effects.

In system -> preferences -> appearance, use the "install" button.

If it doesn't work, untar the folder and look if there are multiple themes in there (like gdm, emerald, icons, ...).

Archive the folder with the gtk theme and then install it.
