I've just started using Gimp and it seems really cool. Got a minor problem though, I've been going through various tutorials that keep asking me to use the 'keep trans' button in the 'Layers' dialog box. I've seen pictures of where it is meant to be, but it's not there on my layers dialog box. Is this functionality available on the ubuntu version? If so, how do I get it? Cheers in advance.

Yeah,
My layers dialog looks like this,
71755
but when I find screen shots on the internet it looks something like this,
71762
Mine seems to be missing the 'Keep Trans' check box. Any ideas?

probably a feature that has either been removed or moved to some other place.. i checked with my gimp2.4 and the unstable new gimp2.5 and both do not have that box... i have never used it, so i don't remember what the point of it was... maybe you should check some more up-to-date tutorials?
i would suggest www.meetthegimp.org video tutorials... really nice... the web looks to be down at the moment though :(

I assume it's the same as lock alpha channel option in the same place.

It's the checkbox indicated by the red edits on the attached image.

whiteraven is correct. The tutorials are older, showing the older version of GIMP. This particular feature was changed to reflect the look of, well, every OTHER paint application out there.

Thanks for all your time, it's really appreciated. Now I can carry on enjoying GIMP, I'm loving it at the moment. :)
