Remote Control Question

Does anyone know if its possible to use another remote control, say for arguments sake an old Sky remote control with the Apple IR Receiver in conjuction with lirc? I would like to setup MythTV and have a remote control that can perform all the functions etc and the little mac one just can't cut it

running 'irw' in the terminal will give output when it detects signals. I think you have to setup a lircrc file for your new remote... you might find one out there already ;)
