Stupid newbie question

Can I install other Desktop Environments such as WindowMaker, Enlightnement, KDE, XFCE, etc...without it messing up my regular Gnome+Compiz configuration?

KDE yes I think, I had Xubuntu installed on top of Gnome for a while on my slow laptop to see if there was any noticeable difference in speed if you install via the terminal it will let you know what is being installed and is partially easier to remove. When I added Xubuntu it installed like 85 more packages when I ran remove Xubuntu desktop it only removed the desktop but not the extra packages but I had a link to a sit that had a paste package to remove all the extras and reinstall Gnome desktop I only had to reinstall Thunder bird after removing everything. I have never completely installed KDE but parts of it so search for better answers. If you look in synaptic-edit-mark packages by task it looks as though it will also at the least give you a list of stuff you can install , I have never used it use your own decisions.
