Login Window / gdmsetup problem

I seem to have an issue with Login Window (gdmsetup), when I try to open it to change my login screen nothing seems to happen with the exception that the harddisk light just keeps flickering on and off wihout stopping. This happens even after logging out and back to the gdm login window. Has anyone else had this problem. running from the terminal gives no error message as to what might be wrong.

It is a (fairly) clean install install, Hardy, although with the 2.6.24-17-generic kernal.

Has anyone else had this issue? Is there perhaps another way to change the login screen? Ta!

I've noticed that sometimes when you try to open it nothing happens...then you go about your business for a while and it pops up. Its really strange..
