Ever since my recent installation of Ubuntu I have been having a disc problem. I insert a disc (dvd or cd) and after about 5 seconds they eject and sometimes when I close the disc tray it opens again by it's self a few times.
Is this a common problem? Is there any fix?
Thanks.

never mentioned a problem like this.
sounds like a hardware problem. maybe the drive is broken.
try to install k3b. Best burning app ever, It detects any drive and its abilities. And maybe it will solve the problem.
sudo apt-get install k3b

Thanks for the reply although I seriously doubt it's a hardware problem as the only reason I'm using Ubuntu as the main OS is because I accidentally deleted osx a couple of days ago and under osx it worked fine. I've downloaded k3b but haven't a clue how to find information on my drives.
Edit: Getting somewhere now. If I push the disc tray in manually fast while on sound juicer it detects the cd and I've managed to extract all my cd's so far. I haven't tried this with and dvd's so far but obviously this isn't the preferred way to insert a disc so if anyone can think of a safer, more normal way all help is welcomed.

I once experienced something similar... I am not sure if it was coinsidence but I figured that the CD/DVD ROM had somehow forgotten its correct closed/open position so I unplugged and at left closed, without power for a few hours to make sure it forgot everything (if it was infact remembering something) and this sorted out my drive

Tried that and still nothing, although I did manage to play a dvd on it last nite :D
