Can anyone help me audacity has change its preference settings without provocation and has limited me to only three playback options:
ALSA: HDA Nvidi: ALC88 Digital (hw:o.1)
ALSA: iec958
ALSA: spdif
Any ideas?

Have you installed any plugins for Audacity recently? I have just returned from a long visit to the Audacity web site, and perhaps a 'bad' plugin has caused your program to cease functioning as it did before? Hope you resolve your problem soon.

No I didn't know audacity had any.

have you tried a few simple things first... like uninstalling it and reinstalling

Yep did that first I even went back to the stable version still nothing.
