Could anyone point me in the right direction for creating a music server? It would be required to be done through the command line rather than Rhythm box or other type of GUI software.

You could try installing mt-daapd (apt:mt-daapd) now known as Firefly (http://www.fireflymediaserver.org/).

It has a web-based interface, but otherwise should just run as a music server daemon.
