I bought one of the first e1505n Inspiron laptops and I was happy with it. Ubuntu Linux was fully supported, as was Windows XP Professional (a business requirement).

Unfortunately, a hardware problem developed (intermittent flashing of the display), which resulted in multiple calls to Dell. This resulted in no less than 2 shipments to their repair depot, leading to the same problem (they never replaced the main board). Finally, they said they would ship me a replacement system, which they did, in the instance of the Inspiron 1525n.

OK, I didn't like it (in terms of the keyboard, touchpad or media controls) but they worked with Ubuntu. The problem came when I tried to install Windows XP. Unlike the 1505, the 1525 only supported Vista. I need XP for business purposes. However, when I attempted to install XP, I was told that I needed a SATA disk driver, right from the git-go.

I've been back and forth with Dell, including almost 4 hours on the phone with them this morning, just to get the same level of functionality I had with the 1505 - to no avail. Ultimately, one of their "Customer Care" representatives hung up on me, saying repeatedly that the system was "performing as designed". They will not make this purchase good.

I will personally never buy another system from Dell, and will discourage anybody I can from buying from them.

I will look to a supplier like System 1776 or others for future laptop purchases. As for the current disposition of the machine, I use it to play music - a $600.00 jukebox. I'm not happy...

sry to hear that, but IMO, theres nothing dell can do... your hardware failed, (every hardware can fail, even the most expensive one) they replaced your system with a new one, what else they can do? any company would have made that , if XP does not support new hardware is not dell's fault but windows XP fault. micro$oft release new software, dell has to keep up with it.

you can try installing windows XP under a virtual machine in ubuntu...
install virtual box ose under ubuntu using synaptic, run it and install xp under it

Hey mark,

I am dual booting xp and ubuntu on a 1525.

To install xp get a program called nLite which uses your existing xp cd to create an xp install CD that has the sata drivers. Give the nlite guy (it's not me) a donation too, it's a great program.

xp works really well on this system (better than ubuntu and vista imho). Took a while to track down all the drivers but well worth it compared to using vista. There are a couple of blogs around that describe which drivers are best to use for xp/1525.

BTW: If you find that the touchpad gets too hot (like wayyyyy too hot) as I and several other unlucky 1525 owners have found - grab one of those usb cooling pads. That should help.

Sorry to hear your having Dell CS issues, but heres some links that might help.

I think the best way to go is virtualization, VirtualBox looks great, there are a few others as well:

If loading windows in a virtual box is not practical for your situation, then nlite is great, as a previous poster mentioned, you can get it here:

Good Luck, and happy to hear Dell sent you a new computer, the rest is just getting it up and running smoothly, hang in there.
